# Aligner wear directions and follow\-up

An aligner routine, a tray sequence and a progress review are connected, but they are different things\. The routine describes prescribed use and care\. The sequence identifies the active appliances\. A review assesses how treatment is developing\. Understanding those roles helps you use the actual directions from your clinical team rather than an internet phrase as your plan\.

### Separate the routine, the sequence and the review

A sequence tells you that active treatment uses successive custom trays\. A routine explains the directions for using the person's appliances\. A review is the clinical assessment of progress\. One of these descriptions cannot replace the others: a tray label is not a complete care instruction, and an appointment date is not a description of the appliance sequence\.

The AAO explains that aligners work through a sequence of planned pressure and that regular check\-ups assess movement and address issues\. It also stresses following prescribed use and giving the team accurate information about difficulties\. The individual's instructions supply the actual hours, changes, care routine and review arrangements\.

Three types of information with different purposes

| Information | Purpose | Example of the distinction |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tray sequence | Identifies the active appliance progression | Which appliance is being discussed |
| Prescribed routine | Explains the individual's use and care directions | The directions supplied for that appliance |
| Progress review | Assesses how treatment is developing | The clinical discussion about movement and issues |

The routine, sequence and review describe different responsibilities\.

### What a progress review adds

A progress review is about how treatment is developing in relation to the plan\. It is not simply a count of trays used\. The clinician can consider movement and issues that need attention, while the person's account supplies information about what happened between visits\.

That makes accurate communication useful\. Describe a difficulty as an observation, such as uncertainty about an instruction or a problem with an appliance, instead of trying to diagnose its cause\. The clinical team can interpret it in the context of the actual plan and explain the next step\.

Accurate observations give the clinical team useful context\.

### Worked example: a tray label is not the missing direction

In a fictional example, someone has a labeled tray packet but cannot find the written direction that explains the change point\. The packet identifies an appliance; it does not answer the missing instruction\. The useful action is to identify the unclear point precisely and obtain the direction from the treating team, rather than borrow another person's interval\.

A short private record can keep the question and the answer together\. Write which instruction was unclear, the explanation the clinical team supplies and any follow\-up they specify\. This is a communication record, not a way to create or modify a wear plan\.

Fictional communication record to complete privately

| Record field | What belongs there |
| --- | --- |
| The unclear point | The exact direction that needs clarification |
| The team's explanation | The answer supplied for the actual plan |
| Follow\-up | Any next step the clinical team specifies |

Record the unclear point and the team's actual explanation together\.

### Orthodontic review and general dental care have different roles

Orthodontic care focuses on tooth movement, alignment and the bite\. General dental care also addresses examinations, cleanings and the health of teeth and gums\. The AAO explains that an orthodontic visit does not replace regular care from a dentist\.

This distinction helps when organizing appointments and records\. A progress conversation about aligners and a dental examination answer different questions, even though both concern the same mouth\. Keep the providers' actual instructions and appointment information clear rather than assuming one visit covers every role\.

Movement review and general dental care serve different roles\.

### Connect daily use, review and the next stage

The active routine belongs to the current plan\. If the proposed approach changes, the directions and the reason for the change should be understood together\. When active treatment ends, retention introduces an appliance with a holding purpose and its own directions\. The plan\-reading and retention guides explain those transitions without replacing the treating team's instructions\.

A transition in the plan needs a clear explanation of the next stage\.
