SMILE-FX® / Clear aligners / Treatment questions
Do I need TADs?
A TAD (temporary anchorage device or mini-screw) adds support for planned tooth movement. Individual need depends on the assessed goal and alternatives.
What does the extra support mean?
The anchor supplies support; the teeth identified in the plan are the movement target.
Can TADs be used with clear aligners?
Yes, in selected plans. In a 2025 university study, patients using Invisalign had planned backward movement of upper back teeth. Some received miniscrew anchorage: the upper back teeth were the movement target; the miniscrews supplied support.
This was a small selected study with incompletely random group assignment. Your orthodontist assesses how any proposed combination fits your individual goal.
What if I would prefer another approach?
Your orthodontist can explain other options and their risks and benefits. Compare them against the same goal.
Bring your preference into the discussion. Compare the proposed support, the intended job and what the arrangements would mean for you. You can consider those differences before agreeing to an approach.
What about placement, comfort and ongoing care?
Leicester's 2023 leaflet describes local numbing and possible soreness. The orthodontist explains placement, review, removal and aftercare; report a loose or painful device to your orthodontist.
Keep your treating team's personal care and contact directions together so you know where to take an ongoing concern.
How does this fit care at SMILE-FX®?
SMILE-FX® lists TADs among tools selected for individual cases. Your assessment connects the available approaches with your own smile and bite goals.
SMILE-FX® describes board-certified orthodontist assessment and follow-ups within comprehensive digital, aligner-focused care. Planning and continuing review help connect an appliance proposal with its intended goal and care arrangements. A digital preview is a planning aid, not a promised result. Read the complete care model and its individual qualifications.
For the broader context, read how clear aligners work or understand an aligner treatment plan. The in-house pathway lesson separately explains appliance supply and continuing care.
